What is Nutri-Score, and what does my A to E grade mean?

Nutri-Score is the A to E grade you'll see on the front of food packs in several European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany and Spain. It's a quick way for shoppers to compare products in the same aisle. A is the most nutritious, E is the least.

How the grade is worked out

Your product gets points for the things to limit: energy, sugar, saturated fat and salt. It then gets points taken off for the good things: fibre, protein, and fruit, vegetables and pulses. The final score decides the letter.

Canoli calculates it for you using the 2023 version of the formula from Santé publique France, the French public health agency that runs Nutri-Score.

An example

Say you create a protein chocolate cookie and it gets a Nutri-Score of E. The protein helps, but the fat and sugar from the chocolate outweigh it. If you use less chocolate, or swap in a lower-sugar one, you'll see the grade move as you change the recipe.

Do I need it?

Nutri-Score is voluntary. It isn't a legal requirement in the UK, and it isn't the same as the HFSS score. But if you sell in Europe, or a buyer asks for it, Canoli has it ready and it's included in your label export.
