What is %NRV (Nutrient Reference Value)?
What NRV means
NRV stands for Nutrient Reference Value. For each vitamin and mineral, the law sets a reference amount, roughly what an average adult needs in a day. For example, the NRV for vitamin C is 80 mg, and the NRV for calcium is 800 mg.
%NRV (Nutrient Reference Value) is how much of that daily amount your product gives, as a percentage. If 100 g of your product contains 40 mg of vitamin C, that's 50% of the NRV, because 40 is half of 80.
Why it matters
%NRV decides two things:
- What goes on your label. You can only list a vitamin or mineral on pack if your product has a meaningful amount of it, which is generally at least 15% of the NRV per 100 g.
- Which claims you can make. For food, "source of vitamin C" needs at least 15% of the NRV per 100 g, and "high in vitamin C" needs at least 30%. Drinks have lower thresholds.
Canoli works out the %NRV for every vitamin and mineral in your recipe, so you can see which ones you're able to list and claim.
